An example of how the marriage of big business and local government can result in harm was shown on 60 minutes last week where Monsanto polluted an entire town with PCB's and the Environmental Protection Agency took no action to protect the environment or the people.
Locally, this type of scenario is being planned for the future with the transportation of nuclear waste through San Bernardino County by truck and/or train to Yucca Mountain. The Federal Government has a real problem with what to do with this extremely dangerous stuff being improperly stored around the country and had promised the power plants that they would be responsible for storing this waste.
The dire need for a solution to this problem outweigh the risk of transporting this nuclear waste to the communities, the environment, the people, etc and provides local government with a lot of power because they need to go along with the program. The resolutions for this proposal have gone through the Congress and the Senate. Nevada is threatening to sue.
The nuclear waste would be shipped into LA harbor and then transported by truck or train to Yucca Mountain. I believe it will be transported right through the Cajon Pass. Just sitting on the freeway next to one of these trucks would be equivalent to having an x-ray. These trucks and trains would have to be unmarked due to concern about possible attacks.
This hasn't started yet and is still in the planning stages. When this starts happening, I think I will take other routes. This reality is heavy stuff.
