A young woman died in the early 70's after swimming in the creek and soaking in the springs. The death was attributed to ameobic encephalitis most likely contracted by the victim immersing herself in one of the pools.
By some accounts the victim was not physically strong and had a history of viral and bacterial infections.

The case in 1976 involved a family who spent much of the Memorial Day weekend at Deep Creek Hot Springs. The 8 year-old victim fell ill after returning home and was hospitalized. An alert medical worker noticed alive amoeba in a sample of spinal fluid and the child was transported to UCLA Medical Center. Aggressive treatment procedures enabled the victim's eventual recovery. This was the first time in history that a patient had survived ameobic encephalitis .

In both cases medical investigators searched the environs of pools and creek and never found the elusive amoeba.
