You have addressed some of my stated concerns and questions in your common ground post. Thank you. Let me make sure I've gotten it right. What we can agree on is that we care about the springs, that trash is a problem, and that some people do not care and some are violent. O.k. so far. You discuss human waste but it is not clear whether that is also something we can all agree on or if it is your own most pressing concern, but I hope that we can all agree on that, as I certainly do!
We disagree on how to address these concerns, you say. You then describe two schools of thought, presumably on how to address these concerns. I would suggest adding a third category, at least, since one would be needed before I became a part of the discussion, as I do not fit into either group.
I realize that these lands are "public," but that says nothing about how to address the stated concerns of trash and human waste, or other concerns of mine such as disrespect. If pressuring law enforcement agencies over problems is the only solution, then I am indeed afraid for the future of my favorite place. So, I meet the first part of the requirement for the first school of thought, but not the second.
And, I'm afraid that I fare even worse on the second school of thought, as I do not think that the majority of the public "should" access the springs in any particular fashion, and whatever respect I have for Mr. Castro, I do not feel that he "should" be a "vigilante" to control the "criminal element" nor do I feel that he is wrong for charging his fees or for deciding who he will and will not allow to access the springs through Bowen Ranch.
So, with all due respect and great appreciation for your attempt to address my questions and concerns, I am not so sure that we have yet nailed down what we can and cannot agree on. However, you have nailed down (nicely!) one thing that you and I can presumably agree on: that we hope the argument over "who does more" will lead to contests that leave the springs spotless!!
Anyone else out there want to take a break from the merry-go-round and give some input on what we can agree on and suggestions for the survivability of the springs in the face of increased usage?
