Yes you are right Paul, the Moss Mill route is the one on the east side of the Bowen Ranch. You can see where that route when you cut south off of the Bowen Ranch Rd cuts for a short distance through an edge of what is a 40 acre parcel, at least in the past owned by I think a couple named Kevin and Tanya, friends of Mike. Where that route leaves the private property portion you can see two small black squares which is the Moss Mill location. The rest of the route as you can see is in BLM, then USFS lands all the way to the USFS parking spot where trail 3W02 to the DCHS begins. There is ( or used to be ) a USFS Kiosk there at the parking spot ( where the X in the word " approx " is located. From the topo lines shown just east of the square 40 acre private parcel, it looks to me like a route could be rather easily made to go within the BLM lands to the Bowen Ranch Rd. Back in the time when it was a public route the last section where it follows a small canyon down to the USFS parking area ( from the big U turn in the road to the X in " approx ", it was graded, allowing two wheel vehicles to get there for hikes to the springs. This route would be by far the easiest to improve/open for access to trail 3W02 if the Bowen Ranch closes. I don't think the agencies would ever consider improving the route around the West side of the Bowen Ranch which eventually goes by the Freedom Trail parking spot then on the the USFS lot at the Kiosk. Its just too rough, rocky, long with some steep hills past the Freedom Trail parking area.

After the Willow Fire of 1999, a year later when the area was reopened for hiking to DCHS, another public route was created for a while which you can see on the map, which heads north just a bit west of " aprox ", passing just on the east side of the word " spring ", then taking the two next left hand turn options on to where it intersects with the main dirt road on the west side of the Bowen Ranch. You see it also passes through private property, which I think is another 80 acre parcel with a common boundary with Mikes 80 acre parcel. I don't know who owns that parcel, but I remember when they fenced off and closed that route they gave the reason that it went through private property. It was a decent route and much shorter that the longer way around by the Freedom Trail. The last hill going down to the USFS parking area from that west side is steep and gets damaged rather easily from winter rains. The hill on the opposite side of the USFS parking are coming down from the Moss Mill route is more gradual and handles the rain runoff better Looking at the topo lines it looks like that road section through the private property part could be moved just west a bit into BLM lands. It was named and signed " Route 2 ". The steep hill in the last part was also graded when this route was opened, but as I mentioned the drainage situation is a problem there so it deteriorated quickly and was not graded again.
