When you are at the springs, at the big beach area up hill from the Phoenix Hot Pool ( the furthest one upstream by the creek ) then if you look basically north east and hike to the top of that hill you can get reception there. You can work your way straight up it, or a bit easier is to go up to the Pacific Crest Trail then head on it a ways in an upstream, north direction, then get on the ridge that takes you to the top of the hill. Also you can get on the Bowen Ranch Trail and go back up it ways to the top of Mo Fo Hill, then after about 10 minutes of walking to a point where you can see back down the canyon westerly. These two spots get reception I think because they get a signal from a tower somewhere west, maybe off of the ridge above Wrightwood where there are towers, or these days it could be something even closer. That hill just north east of the springs would be your quickest option but on the other hand it is opposite the direction of where you would be going generally on your hike out from the springs. I have had reception in other spots in the canyon and on the hills, but most places down in the deep canyon you get nothing. I thought I had heard or read before that calling 911 goes through a satellite. If so that should work in an emergency anywhere down there.
