Thanks Wizard. I just saw this post on Yelp, a site that works my nerves, and that people are "reviewing" the hot springs like a restaurant or something. But this is literally from today or yesterday? It's like a dialog:
"Possible business opportunity.
My friend and I drove a couple hours out from LA. Got to Bowen Ranch 10 minutes before their posted 10pm close time. It struck me as an homage to the "dueling banjos" scene in Deliverance (goo.gl/rTt2bk).
We stopped at the gate shack in our very quiet Ford Fiesta to pay the guy (early 50s, high strung). And then...
Me: Hi, how are you?
Guy: (muffled and angry. stomping out from the back of the shack) (unintelligible)...your engine!
Me: did you just say turn off the engine?
Guy: Turn off your engine! Just so you know I won't be doing this anymore!
Me: Doing what?
Guy: Letting people in past 9! Or doing illegal things like guiding people down to the springs past dark.
Me: (processing this) ... Thanks for letting me know. No Problem.
Guy: It IS a problem because the sheriff is going to shut me down because of all the rescue helicopters they have to use down there because of all the stupid people!
Me: (offering the $20 camping fee) Well I don't want to add to your problems.
Guy: (ignoring the $20) The world is full of stupid people!
Me: (still holding out the $20) You seem upset!
Guy: I'm not upset! I've been doing this for 25 years and I want to do something else!
Me: (gesturing toward the deposit boxes outside the shack) Do you want me to give you this $20 or do you want me to put it somewhere else?
Guy: I'd tell you where to put it, but, I'll keep that to myself.
Me: I appreciate that... You seem angry!
Guy: (takes money) I am angry. I've put in my time and I just get a bunch of stupid people.
Me: I don't appreciate the way you are talking to me.
Guy: (satisfied chuckle) There you go! Expletive! (Throws money out of the shack) You are on private property and had better get off.
Me: So you don't want the $20?
We made do with a renegade campsite instead.
He seemed like he might be looking to sell."
