There is a Facebook group for the hot springs - not the "main" group, Celtfire's group page, but another one (I think there are at least three ...). On this group page, someone has been posting that Bowen Ranch is going to be closing to all parking for the springs "soon" - by the end of the year, early next year. When asked for more details, this person gives none. Nor how they would know this. Just "soon."
It seems like so many of the rumors that circulate around the springs. Like I remember seeing on another social media page, that the "springs had been shut down, finally," when what was shut was some of the PCT during the fires two summers ago. Or that - according to another rumor - local fire department and forest service had been meeting to formulate a plan to "remove" or blow up all the man-made alterations at the hot springs, i.e., all the constructed tubs.
Anyway, I always take these things with a grain of salt - but has anyone heard this or have any concrete information confirming it or the opposite?
First off I agree that rumors about the springs being shut down must be taken with a grain of salt as you mentioned. It’s entirely possible that the man made improvements could be removed, the FS has the legal ability to do that like they did to a hot spring in Idaho a few years ago.
Regarding the Bowen Ranch closing for parking, personally I doubt it. Mike Castro certainly benefits from the revenue stream, and he certainly won’t give it up. Personally I would be in favor of no more parking at Bowen Ranch.this would cut down immensely on the number of people who go to the springs. Diehards will still go via the JP4and the Freedom Trail. In recent years DCHS has been loved to death , and we all know about the increasing trash, sanitation issues, and bad behavior on the part of some.
