I don't think there is any official policy for crapping in the National Forest, but the usual recommendation is to go at leat 200 feet from a water source , dig a hole 6 inches deep, and go for it. Even better would be to pack out your own crap, but people rarely do this. The problem at Deep Creek is it's difficult to find a spot 200 feet or more away from the creek because of the surrounding ridges, and also the soil is less sandy up away from the creek and sometimes more difficult to dig.
I think sanitation is a big problem at Deep Creek . Fecal coliform counts can be high. We rarely put our head underwater in either the pools or the creek, especially when the creek is in low flow season and doesn't flush out the canyon naturally.
