Trailgal,
Here is the thing about parking at the damn. In the 70's and 80's bad people abused their privilege to be free and have fun there. The BLM or Forest service took control of the area by erecting NO TRESPASSING signs restricting cables, fences, boulders then patrolling the area and issuing tickets. They discovered teenage drinking and a large gambit of crimes by party animals. Also these bad apples have trashed the area with broken glass, graffiti and other bad things. You may still park about 3/4 of a mile from the restricted area along the Mojave river but the same bad apples frequent the area, bored. Also it is about a 6 mile hike from there. Just go to the damn and the trail starts on the north side of the Deep creek.
A safer alternative is to park on the side of the HWY 173 where the pavement ends. There is a large Juniper tree with ample parking there where a person may observe your car too. Just go north along the trail and cross the creek to get to the Pacific crest trail. Then go east and uphill to the springs. It is a 5 + mile hike there. Don't let the nay sayers or bad apples get you down. I admire your spirit.
Good luck and HAPPY TRAILS too you !
