Setting out on Deep Creek Trail, the first sign of life in this dusty desert landscape is a golden-bearded man wearing only a backpack and a smile. He offers a cheery “Hello!” as he approaches. A few steps behind him, a young woman wrapped in nothing more than a fanny pack catches her breath and musters a friendly nod as she treks past. Neither appears distracted by the sand burning their bare soles or the midday sun baking their skin a shade of deep pink.
