EastBay, thank you for being a voice of reason!
I guess they don't get it ... even before the JF3 trail was created, you could still drive back there. You could either park at that spot if that was all your car could handle or drive down the big hill to the Forest Service's parking lot at the trail head. You could always walk along that road to reach the trail head if your car wasn't capable of being driven there. OR you could just hike down a canyon to connect with the main Bowen Ranch Trail. So what exactly changed about a person's options if they park back at JF3 now that a new trail exists???? Absolutely nothing! You can still hike down to the springs from that spot.
And BTW, Naked Man, if we had car trouble back on those routes we would hike out to make a phone call to someone that could help us. After all, we are there for hiking ... why would we call Mike Castro? We don't even know him well enough to have a phone number!
And to answer another of your questions ... which I've probably stated before ... we have never had any run-ins with Mike Castro. We've never seen him do anything. He's always very friendly when he sees us. I just reserve judgement ... with so many "rumors" circulating about the guy it makes me wonder how the rumors got started? It seems like so much "smoke" there has to be some "fire" in there somewhere. I'm just keeping my eyes open and will make up my own mind when the time comes.
