There is a segment of the population that have a condition referred to as the Furries. It's debatable whether it is a mental health issue or otherwise but they have an urge to dress up and live out their private lives in furry animal costumes. It has grown large enough with enough people coming out that there are now furrycons ... conventions for those that prefer the lifestyle. I was reading an article that although a lot of folks would likely do it for fun, there is a much more serious segment that may have suffered from early childhood drama and resort to taking on the persona of an animal to escape from reality. Kind of like a program I recall seeing where a man was so nervous going on dates that he insisted on conversing with women only through a sock puppet. My Strange Addiction, the show, had some segments related to this as well.
