tcu11,
Your options are to spend an extra hour or two on the freeway and an extra 100-200 dollars at the ranch.
Or, hike an extra mile on the Bradford ridge trail.
Sounds like a no brainer to me.
Back in the 80's-90's when I took my children to the springs I always told them to stay in eyesight of me and / or their Mom. Which was a good policy.
You should inform these girls that they will almost certainly be seeing naked persons. All sizes , shapes and colors. I would NOT want the responsibility you are taking but good luck with it.
Deep Creek hot springs is the American dream magnified. But remember, safety is the first priority. Last Tuesday I saw 2 snakes while there. So inform them in advance on what to do if a snake is seen. Also you will find it good to have each person to have a day pack with these items for each person:
1) Towel
2) at least 2 quarts of water
3) sunscreen and/or lotion
4) food
5) emergency flashlight.
You should also have them form groups of 4-5 persons who watch out for each other and each group have a cell phone. Flip flops should be avoided. Make sure you have someone with a first aid kit and a snake bite kit. Good hiking boots with thick socks are a must. You will most likely have some one with blisters so be ready for that.
It is also possible they might see coyotes, deer, bobcat, rabbits and lizards. These animals are more abundant in the early morning or late evening hours. They know that is the best time to hike the area so learn from them.
It has been my experience to always have some books that identify the plants and animals in the area. If you do not have these a trip to the library would solve that problem.
Before you leave the springs you should have them fill their water bottles from the source springs. Give the water time to cool before leaving.
As you know you/they are going on an adventure they will not forget. So be careful and best of luck !
