There's one spot everyone seems to get disoriented. When you leave the ranch parking lot, you pretty quickly descend a steep hill. When you get to the bottom of this hill, there is a dirt road on which you turn left for a few feet before finding the trail again and continuing. Before you turn left on that dirt road, do as Rick says and look behind you and remember how you came down the hill. When people hike back, maybe out of tiredness, everyone seems to tend not to hike up that path they came down, but continue on into a valley on the right, even though hikers have put a tree trunk down to discourage taking the wrong path into this valley.
