The kayak shop I was talking with made it sound like they release you very close to the dam, then pick you up a few miles downstream at Willow Beach. She recommended about 7 hours on the water. From my understanding powerboats are not allowed on Sundays and Mondays only so that's another option although it's so easy to damage the blades on those things. Finally I was reading something about the rising tides so that would be likely what you talk about above and to be careful not to get stuck in one of the caves when this happens.
