The problem is that there are some people that camp down there and shit a few feet from the creek/source, leave trash, etc. Then, there are people like me who carry 4 times more trash than I came in with and bury their waste 4 feet underground 100 yards away from any water. Generalizations....Quote

The problem is that very few, if any, of the people camping at Deep Creek are thru-hikers. The PCT permits are designated for through hikers only, not people intent on camping solely for the purpose of going to the springs. The bigger problem is this- most of the trash comes from people camping overnight down there. Plus there is the sanitation issue.
The USFS is understaffed. Otherwise they would be going there regularly and ticketing these people.
I definitely agree with you though, that most of the human-contamination and trash comes from people who stay the night, but there is also a tremendous amount of trash from people coming for just the day. Regardless, it is something that regulars should "enforce" as I've seen some do
