I've been visiting DCHS off and on for four years, and have entered via Bowen Ranch every time. Despite reports of problems, I've never had any problem with Mike as a customer of the ranch. I will say that $10 per night is pretty cheap camping, no matter what taxes you've paid. It's my understanding that anywhere you park on San Bernardino National Forest land (BLM land), you are required to purchase and display an Adventure Pass. It's been a few years since I purchased one, but it seems that it costs 25 or 30 bucks, if memory serves. If you use it a lot, that gets pretty cheap, of course. The pass is not required on Bowen Ranch's private land. I've been to Bowen ranch just about every season of the year, and when the road's at its worst, it isn't that bad. Just go slow and take it easy...I've seen city cars there that I wouldn't think could make it into the mall parking lot, past the speed bumps.

As for camping at the creek, the USNF website and a bunch of (tax-payer-funded) signs clearly say it's against the rules. I've personally seen two rangers walk through a crowd of nude visitors (myself included) to threaten tickets to campers (both nude and clothed), without batting an eye at the nude (day-use) people.

If nudity is a problem to you, then you probably need to find a different place to hang out. I've been the only nude person there a couple of times, but only for part of the day. Nudity is part of DCHS...you don't have to join in, but it's an accepted part of the area. If you enjoy being nude, DCHS is the place for you! Hiking the trails, camping at Bowen, soaking and swimming at the springs and creek, are all done nude virtually every day. If you've never given nudity in nature a try, DCHS is a great place to experience it!

However you access DCHS, pack out your trash! And, please consider bringing a trash bag to pack out some trash that others left behind.

Lastly, however you access DCHS, and whether you're wearing anything other than skin or not, BRING PLENTY OF WATER!! Many people have run into trouble, and/or been helped or rescued due to not bringing enough water to visit and return up the elevation and distance. No matter which trail you choose, you WILL hike uphill to get back, and it will most likely be hot when you do it.
