i did it last week - and was not the only free hiker. lots of people still do it, increasingly young people do it, from Bowen Ranch.
Word of warning: the sun in these parts, altitudes, summer time, is STRONG. I had covered myself in 50 SPF, and had a towel on my shoulders to prevent my pack from chafing on the straps, and i hiked at 8:30 am to 9:15 or so - hiking in - and wound up burnt on my shoulders from the hike it seems.
