A while back I was at Big Caliente Hot Springs in the hills behind Santa Barbara. Little did I know deer hunting season just opened. As I was walking the short distance to the creekside pools upstream, I heard gunshots very nearby. Turns out a hunter was shooting at me from afar and thought I was a deer! That's the closest I've been to being killed. He apologized, but I was pissed off and lectured him a bit about gun safety (ie be sure you know what your target is before shooting etc).
Didn't realize Dick Cheney hunts out here as well.
