As an alternative to water, I would recommend also trying coconut water. It worked better for me when I was training for the SF marathon two years back, aside from gel packs. High in potassium although lower on sodium. On a hot day drinking only pure water is a bad idea ... electrolytes/salts are needed as well. Heck, a salty snack will do.
