Yes, if it were closer I'd be there all the time. But if you do some creative accounting, you could almost justify a day trip up there from LA. Going at a decent speed on the 101, it is three hours from LA. The beach is right next to where you park, just down a short hill. Central LA to Hesperia is about an hour on the freeway, then about thirty minutes on dirt road, then about an hour of hike to the springs? Kind of similar almost?
Pirates seems not to have camping at the beach, but there is this: It is a nude beach a short strenuous walk, or a five minute drive away from hot springs! Well, commercialized hot springs, the old hotel that is called Sycamore Springs on the road to the beach. Hot sulfurous water in each and every room, and outdoor tubs on the hills for guests who just want to rent a tub to fill with the water for an hour. Across the street, Sycamore Springs owns another property that allows camping (Avila Hot Springs), and has primitive cabins, and a pool filled with the mineral water. All right next to one of the most beautiful nude beaches on the west coast. It is really a paradise up there. Of course cheaper hotels abound in Pismo Beach, and you are then 10 minutes away from the nude beach depending on which route you take there.
