I too am a local but am also a regular visitor. I have seen the area in a prestine condition, but it has been some time, and now that summer is upon us, the crowds get thicker and less respectful of the area.
I have spoken to many who visit, first timers and long time attenders and their comments on the condition depend directly on the physical condition of the area. Most have found out about the area on the web... if there was a way to remove some of that, I wonder how the place would change.
Whatever you do, make it your own... you have found that moving away from the crowds helps, me too. I have explored much of the area now and feel more confident about my surroundings out there.
Don't let the disrespectful discourage you from one of the most beautiful retreats in our area.
