On my way to a more serene local of Deep Creek last week I came across a young man hiking out on the Freedom Trail with a hurt shoulder. He said it got injured when he fell on the rocks at DCHS as he was preparing to jump into the creek by the hot pools. He was very parched and tired and told me it took him six hours ( not sure how accurate that is ) to get from DCHS to where he was when I found him. It was getting hot and I gave him all my water ( four bottles worth ) and explained to him the directions how to get back to the Bowen Ranch Rd by the Bowen Ranch where he would be more likely to come across people in vehicles that could help him. From what I could see he was out of water pulling a small empty plastic bottle out of his pack to refill from my bottles, the rest I told him to drink up so I could still have my bottles for refill use. The guy said his friend had bailed on him the day before at DCHS so he was without a ride. He looked well enough to walk the two and a half miles to where I told him to go, As far as I'm concerned you go to a remote outdoor destination like DCHS you need to be smart, prepared, and careful or you are going to suffer some uncomfortable consequences, maybe even life threatening as this young man could have easily experienced heat exhaustion, or even heat stroke. Hopefully he will learn from his rough experience.
