Sawyer, the people you see illegally camping at the springs are not part of any specific "nudist Group". Also keep in mind that they are well aware of the simple Forest Service rules, but have chosen to violate them. This is a big problem for all of us, because it gives the authorities better reason to permanently restrict public access to the springs. Think it won't happen? Think again.... I have been involved in hot springs advocacy and preservation throughout the west for over 30 years, and believe me, I've seen many, many natural hot springs on public lands closed off, shut down, or in two cases, dynamited to prevent people from going there. Many of you reading this will think, "no way, that's impossible!". Indeed it is a problem that both the BLM and Forest Service operate under very tight budget constraints, and they have severely curtailed their enforcement staff due to the cuts. Also, they have to prioritize and spread their enforcement capabilities over very large areas, and they have their hands full with other issues besides the current illegal camping problems at Deep Creek, But rest assured, multiple people have contacted the FS about John Bassist, Camper Dave, and Scotty, so the rangers are very well aware of the issues.
I also want to be clear that these three guys are as different from each other as night and day. One of them just happens to be quite responsible as far as cleaning up trash etc, but nevertheless, they are all there illegally.

If you want to be part of the solution, let your voice be heard and contact the rangers at 909-382-2787 or 909-337-1104, or E-mail Ranger Brad Burns at bburns@fs.fed.us.

" Regarding your comment that "the most vocal people about "no camping" are themselves camping there",

That is not the case. In fact, I have been particularly vocal about the issue on this forum, and other regular posters and Deep Creek regulars also fully understand the importance of following the simple rules. In fact, many of the regular Deep Creekers really are an asset to the springs area by picking up trash, rebuilding and/or cleaning the pools, etc. (They know who they are ;-)_

Also, regarding your comment "I know the thru hikers going to canada looking for flat ground do end up there, but the Forestry Workers usually just send them on their way without a ticket as they respect their journey and understand DCHS is a unique place along the Pacific Crest trail were there is no camping. Those guys have permits for the whole trail."

I think you would have to agree that there is a major distinction and impact from a PCT through hiker staying one or two nights versus an illegal camper sleeping in the Anniversary Pool for weeks or months on end.

I hope these responses help you fully understand the current situation.
