Mike wasn't exaggerating about after dark rescues. There have been many rescues, due to people who weren't prepared or familiar with the area, who tried to hike out at night.
The last couple of times I've been to Bowen Ranch, it's been posted that the ranch gate closes at 10 pm. He used to leave it open, and people came and went at all hours. I'm sure that got really old, so I don't blame him for putting a limit on it.
As for free hiking, I've hiked nude from Bowen Ranch to the springs, as well as several miles up and down the PCT and along the creek, with no problems at all. I've arrived nude, spent 3 or 4 days, and left nude, without ever wearing a thing. It's a good idea to carry a pair of shorts, just in case someone gets upset. Hiking with only a hat and boots, and even with nothing at all, I've met no telling how many hikers, most of whom were clothed, and the worst I've gotten was silence as they passed. Most have greeted me, and lots have stopped to chat on the trail.
Just be sure to take plenty of water, and try to avoid hiking out during the heat of the day.
