Actually Paul, even though people hike regularly from the Bowen Ranch to DCHS nude, once you leave the Bowen Ranch property you do cross a section of BLM land before you reach the USFS boundry down the first hill in the canyon where old route 3N59A passes through, where the USFS parking area is. Back when the corrupt BLM ranger Barry Nelson oversaw that area I called him about the BLM's stance on nudity and hiking from the Bowen Ranch to the springs across the BLM lands and Barry said it was illegal and they would cite nude offenders. I however have never heard of anyone being cited for hiking nude from the Bowen Ranch to the springs by any BLM rangers. Seems there was a recent ruling also that has disallowed specifically nudity on BLM lands. Regarding the USFS we know they view nudity in the San Bernardino Forest area as ok and they term it as " accepted practice. Generally visitors to the Bowen Ranch who plan on hiking nude are most likely not aware that they are crossing that small section of BLM lands, and are unfamiliar with the nudity laws pertaining to them. It would be informative to call the BLM current ranger for the area to get his take on this particular issue. I will be headed out on a trip for a while but maybe someone else here can call and inquire about this. The BLM Barstow office at phone number 760-252-6000 should be able to direct anyone calling to the appropriate ranger or personel to give an answer on this issue regarding nudity and their lands. One might also ask them in addition if they have ever, or would ever give citation to people hiking nude from the Bowen Ranch to DCHS on the Bowen Ranch trail while crossing the small BLM portion.
