I hate to be the one to throw the sour apple into the mix, but my experience over many years of hiking to the springs tells me that single women can be at risk. A young woman who was part of a 7 person group I organized the first time she visited the springs told me that she wanted to spend a day and night there by herself. I told her I believed it was a dangerous idea, but she went ahead with her solitary trip and was almost raped by an aggressive horn-dog during the day. The assailant backed off when she called for help and a man and woman intervened. My young friend never returned to the hot springs. When I sometimes organized groups of men and women for day trips to the springs, I learned to make sure that there were never more women than men, because single guys would hang around trying to entice the extra woman to go with them.
