San Bernardino, Calif., June 28, 2010 – The San Bernardino National Forest is preparing for one of the biggest recreation weekends of the year, as forest visitors come to enjoy camping, hiking, mountain biking, fishing and a variety of other recreational activities on the national forest in celebration of our country’s independence.
On Sunday July 4, public fireworks displays are planned for both Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake. Visitors are reminded that possession and use of fireworks within the boundaries of the national forest is prohibited by law at all times and strictly enforced.
Wood and charcoal fires are only permitted in designated fire rings and stoves in campgrounds, picnic grounds and Yellow Post sites. Visitors camping in general forest areas can use a propane or gas cooking stove with a valid California Campfire Permit.
“I am encouraging our visitors to plan ahead, and be fire-aware during their forest visit,” said Deputy Forest Supervisor Tom Gillett. “With the public’s help, we can make this a safe and enjoyable holiday”.
All family and group campgrounds will be open for the holiday. Many campsites are available on a first-come first-serve basis, but to ensure a campsite this time of year, visitors are encouraged to make reservations. Reservations can be made online at http://www.recreation.gov or by calling toll free 1-877-444-6777.
