Joel this may not entirely answer your question, but there are several sources of information that list existing hot springs in the western United States. The National Geophysical Data Center has a list and graphic interactive website map showing all hot springs. Only problem is that the latitudes and longitudes are not entirely accurate. Another good source is the Geo-Heat Center. They have giant spreadsheets available of every hot spring and every hot well in the US. Also, it you really like maps, the old giant format Geothermal Resources maps from 1980 and 1981 are awesome. And then there are many hot springs books as well.
Geothermal hot water exists under land masses everywhere on earth. Geologists just know where to drill and how far down. Geothermal Energy will be a major energy resource in the future.
