APPLE VALLEY • Rescuers helped locate two missing teen hikers late Tuesday night in the Deep Creek Canyon area, officials said.
Authorities were able to locate the missing 17-year-olds after 11 p.m. when a third friend went into the canyon to help find them, San Bernardino County Fire officials said.
The two teens had gone hiking and became separated. One of the boys called a parent who then called a 19-year-old friend to help find the boys.
It was at about 11 p.m. when fire officials were called to the area for a swiftwater rescue when they learned one of the boys had fallen into the creek.
The two hikers and the friend were located. The boy who fell into the water was treated for hypothermia and taken to a local hospital. The other two were treated at the scene and released.
No one was seriously injured.
Officials warn hikers to always be prepared when hiking even if planning a short day trip.
They also advise people stay away from water as some of the runoff is coming from snowy mountains making the water extremely cold.
