gysyrob,
Any true gypsy would camp at the freedom trail. This gypsy does.
There are many advantages to this :
1) it cost less, that is why they call it the freedom trail.
2) No forest adventure pass is necessary.
3) It is 1.2 miles from deep creek to the trail head. The Forest service requires campers to stay 1 mile from Deep creek. First time tickets cost 65 $.
4) There are many good camping areas near the trail head. I have a couple that are my favorites for anywhere.
5) Solitude, you can usually have the place to yourself or at least have control of your environment.
6) Security, you can see your car from your camp site. Or you may camp next to your car.
7) There are dual jurisdictions here the south side of the road is in the San Bernardino National Forest. While the north side is in the Bureau of Land Managements territory. This can give you an advantage in case you are dealing with a dishonest ranger. And I have used this.
8) I use t-mobile for my cell phone and I get all 6 antennas going there. And I can use my lap top to go on line there. This is a really good advantage in case a emergency happens. Or you are a computer Geek.
9) There are many good hiking trails all around with some neat geography. Be aware, you may encounter naked hikers too.
10) the numbered trails for your ATV or motorcycle are very evident, usually.
And I could go on and on...
To find the Freedom trail you need a good truck or high clearance vehicle. I"d guess you already have one for Saline Valley. The route in has gotten better over the years from excessive usage. Take all the same precautions as for Saline Valley, water, flashlights, food, etc.
To get there:
Just before the Bowen ranch is a GATE on the right hand side @ 2 hundred yards before the toll building.. Turn right here and go .75 of a mile and another GATE turn left and go 1.25 miles and another road appears on the left go left there. This road goes @ 2 hundred yards and ends, go left again. About 1/2 of a mile and a large parking area appears. This is the Freedom Trail head, park near here and look for a place to camp. My favorite spot is north of this area @ 100 yards. Look south and east for the trail to the hot springs. It is 1.2 mile to the springs but still a 900 foot drop in elevation. Take it easy on the way out if your gypsy lungs are not in good shape.
Good luck and happy hot springing ! And when your week end is over please post a trip report here :~)
