I've been a visitor to DCHS for over thirty years and, like Paul P., I've seen uncivil activities occur there. I agree with Katrina in that the SB County Sheriffs are not the cops you would want at the springs. They largely view us as an immoral pack of criminals.
I don't manage to hike in to the springs often enough to know just how bad it's getting, but in my experience getting the law in to enforce some measure of civility will probably change the culture for good. I like bring able to not wear clothes for the entire time I'm there. The nudity makes Deep Creek seem other-worldly, much apart from the crowded, sometimes nasty city. Regular police or ranger patrols would most likely end that.
Another view is that the current political regime in Washington is not likely to want to spend money on enforcing the law in an out of the way wilderness place where they think nudity, drinking, drugs, sex and sedition are probably occurring. They'd most likely just make the place off limits rather than deal with it.
I think that a fresh dialogue of concerned parties be commenced to discuss the problems at DCHS. The dialogue would culminate in a meeting held in neutral territory, maybe a meeting place in Hesperia or Apple Valley, and involve all connected parties, including Mike Castro and Katrina. Other participants should be the SB Sheriff rep, BLM, Forest Service and as many concerned citizens as we can get there. If this meeting takes place we MUST leave our tempers at home, no matter how any of us have been wronged in the past. I'd be willing to work with others on this but I don't want to see side issues take over. Those side issues would be past personal conflicts, the Willow Fire, legalization of pot, wilderness permits or anything else that would confuse and derail our train of thought.
Any takers?
