URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE

...POWERFUL WINTER STORMS WILL BRING PERIODS OF HEAVY SNOW AND
HIGH WINDS TO THE MOUNTAINS...

.A SERIES OF POWERFUL WINTER STORMS IS EXPECTED TO AFFECT THE
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MOUNTAINS DURING THE UPCOMING WEEK. THE FIRST
STORM SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO BRING SOME LIGHT SNOW TONIGHT...WITH
SNOW COVERAGE AND INTENSITY EXPECTED TO INCREASE ON MONDAY. THE
HEAVIEST SNOW AND STRONGEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO AFFECT THE LOS
ANGELES AND VENTURA COUNTY MOUNTAINS MONDAY AFTERNOON INTO MONDAY
NIGHT...WHEN SOUTHERLY WINDS COULD GUST AS HIGH AS 75 MPH. SNOW
SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT. WHILE SNOW
IS NOT EXPECTED TO AFFECT THE INTERSTATE 5 CORRIDOR WITH THIS
FIRST STORM SYSTEM...IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT STRONG WINDS AND
HEAVY RAINFALL WILL STILL CREATE DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS ON
INTERSTATE 5 MONDAY AFTERNOON INTO MONDAY EVENING. ADDITIONAL
HEAVY SNOW IS POSSIBLE LATER NEXT WEEK AS ADDITIONAL STRONG STORMS
ARE FORECAST TO AFFECT THE AREA. THIS WILL LIKELY REQUIRE
ADDITIONAL WINTER WEATHER PRODUCTS.

THE SNOW LEVEL IS GENERALLY EXPECTED TO RANGE BETWEEN 6500 AND 7000
FEET ON MONDAY...THEN WILL LOWER TO BETWEEN 5500 AND 6000 FEET
MONDAY NIGHT. TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED TO RANGE FROM
1 TO 2 FEET ABOVE 7000 FEET THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT...WITH 4 TO 12
INCHES BETWEEN 6000 AND 7000 FEET. THE GUSTY WINDS COULD CREATE
CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW WITH VISIBILITIES
POTENTIALLY LOWERING TO NEAR ZERO AT TIMES ON MONDAY.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN LOS ANGELES/OXNARD HAS ISSUED A
WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW AND STRONG WINDS...WHICH IS
IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM MONDAY TO 3 AM PST TUESDAY. THE WINTER STORM
WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

* TIMING: PERIODS OF LIGHT SNOW ARE EXPECTED TO OCCUR TONIGHT...
WITH SNOWFALL COVERAGE AND INTENSITY INCREASING THROUGH THE DAY
MONDAY INTO MONDAY EVENING. THE PERIOD OF HEAVIEST SNOWFALL AND
STRONGEST WINDS IS EXPECTED TO BE MONDAY AFTERNOON INTO MONDAY
EVENING. SNOW LEVELS WILL RANGE BETWEEN 6500 AND 7000 FEET ON
MONDAY...THEN LOWER TO BETWEEN 5500 AND 6000 FEET MONDAY NIGHT...
WITH LOCALLY LOWER SNOW LEVELS NEAR THUNDERSTORMS.


* MAIN IMPACT: TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 2 FEET ARE
EXPECTED ABOVE 7000 FEET...WITH 4 TO 12 INCHES POSSIBLE BETWEEN
6000 AND 7000 FEET. SOUTHERLY WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE TO
30 TO 50 MPH WITH GUSTS AS HIGH AS 75 MPH ON MONDAY AFTERNOON
AND EVENING.

* OTHER IMPACTS: AT HIGHER ELEVATIONS...THE COMBINATION OF HEAVY
SNOWFALL AND GUSTY WINDS COULD BRING VISIBILITIES NEAR ZERO AT
TIMES MONDAY INTO TUESDAY.


PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE
EXPECTED TO OCCUR. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST AT THE
HIGHEST ELEVATIONS THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN
AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT...FOOD...AND
WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.
