I too would fight tooth and nail any form of government "search before you enter" policy, although I would not be opposed to increasing ranger patrols.
However, I do take exception to a couple of your points. You say that it is not the drinking and smoking that's that problem, it's the trash and rowdy behavior. That is true as far as it goes, however I submit to you that it is that very drinking and smoking that is the cause of the trash and rowdy behavior. Take away the alcohol and other narcotics and those people would probably be much better behaved and more responsible.
You also state that "Your enjoyment of the Springs has little to do with whether I'm sitting under the trees smoking a joint or not". That may be your opinion, but don't project that opinion onto others. I personally am very uncomfortable in the presence of people doing any kind of drugs (yes, even if it is just a "joint"
and even if you are off sitting under the trees. What if I were to engage in open and blatant gay sex at the springs? To use your same line of reasoning, I would argue that that shouldn't interfere with your enjoyment of the springs, but I bet it sure would!
