Holiday Weekend Marks Start of Summer Recreation Season in the San Bernardino National Forest

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif., May 20, 2009— Most of the recreation sites on the San
Bernardino National Forest will be open for forest visitors by Memorial Day weekend. The
forest is especially pleased that two recently closed sites are reopening to the public
including Hanna Flat Campground, which has been reconstructed after suffering damage in
recent wildfires, and the Thurman Flat Picnic Area, which is newly renovated. The wildfire
damaged portions of the Pacific Crest Trail are also now reopened.
“Once again, we look forward to summer visitors enjoying camping, hiking, mountain
biking, fishing or a variety of other recreational activities on the forest, said Forest
Supervisor Jeanne Wade Evans. “The forest is a wonderful place to recreate and enjoy the
great outdoors.”

While recreating, forest officials encourage visitors to be vigilant and aware of their
surroundings and responsibilities when visiting the forest. “While visiting, exercise safe
practices and always remain aware of the current situation outdoors and the potential for
wildfire in this area,” said Evans.

With summer approaching, forest officials have restricted recreational target shooting to
public shooting ranges operated under special use permit. More recreational target shooting
information is available at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/recreation/target/

Campfires are only permitted at developed sites in agency provided fire rings in
campgrounds, picnic grounds and yellow post sites. Outside of developed sites, only
propane or gas cooking stoves are permitted.

Although a number of campsites are available on a first-come first-serve basis, visitors are
encouraged to make reservations to ensure having a campsite this time of year.
Campground reservations can be made online through Reserve USA at:
http://www.recreation.gov or by calling toll free 1-877-444-6777.

The Forest Adventure Pass must be displayed on a visitor’s parked vehicle when recreating
in High Impact Recreation Areas and certain developed sites like campgrounds and picnic
areas. A list of designated fee sites and areas is posted on the Fee Program website at:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/ap/

Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) users can now download a riding area map, which are also
available at the forest ranger stations. OHV visitors are urged to visit or call ahead to
confirm their OHV plans. The San Bernardino National Forest OHV webpage address is:
