Also, cows are extremely bothered by the prescence of dogs. Several people in England who have walked their dogs near open cow pastures have been killed by charging/stampeding cows. I don't know if it's true, but a rancher friend of mine said the best thing is to move as quietly as possible when passing them so the herd charging instinct doesn't kick in.
