Hello Celtfire :-) Yeah the helicoptor ride you describe ( sounds like from experience ) is something akin to a nightmare from my point of view ( as I'm sure it would be for most ). Terrible that people have to endure such things of war.
My airforce friend told me that phosphorus could be in the device I found. If the Daily Press doesn't come out with a story on this, I think I'll call the Sheriffs to see if they can tell me what they actually did about the device ( did they blow it up? ). Since I hike in that area I'll also check it out next time I'm up that way too.
I'm going to put two more photos at my Flickr site which show one with my daughters and another of my wife on top of one of the high peaks of Fairview Mountains, at a location aprox 100 yards or so from where I found this device. Take care Celtfire, hope you are doing well :-)
