I haven't tried the Bradford Ridge Trail for a number of reasons, but perhaps I should have another look at it. I have tried three routes - upstream and downstream on the PCT and Bowen Ranch. Downstream from Hook Creek Road on the PCT is too long for a day trip unless you are training which is what I was doing, for a hike on Whitney.
I don't like Bowen Ranch because I spend too much time driving relative to hiking. It takes me 2:10 - 2:20 to get to Bowen Ranch trailhead from my house, whereas I can get to the downstream trailhead for PCT in 1:30 minutes. The hike up PCT takes me about 1:45 - 2hrs. At best, the net time benefit to Bowen is 30-45 minutes depending on how fast I hike. What I like about PCT is the gentle grade, so you can get into a rhythm when hiking.
I drive a Prius, so I am worried about clearance on the dirt section of 173 if coming from 15. Also, I heard that the trip back up the Bradford Ridge trail takes about 2 hours, even though it is only 2.5 miles. If that is true then I probably don't save any time relative to the PCT and still spend more time in the car.
Any advice you have on the dirt section of 173 and the hiking time on the Bradford Ridge trail would be welcome.
