In early December of 2004, the year we moved into our new house here in Apple valley there was a really big snowfall over a two day period. There was about 10-12 inches of snow at our house and on the day that the snow ended I tried to get up to DCHS to get some photos. I tried three different routes including the Bowen Ranch Rd in my 4-wheel drive F-150 ( with a lift kit and big tires, sits pretty high ) and hit snow that was so deep that I could not make in more than a little ways past the village ( which is at the cattle guard ). There is still a good deal of snow still at our house ( 3000 foot elevation ) still this evening and the Bowen Ranch I believe is around 4,500 feet in elevation or maybe even a bit higher. Its easy to slide off of the dirt road in those conditions unless you have a good set of tire chains. Having a couple of pieces of carpet about 4 feet wide and around 8 feet long work great for putting behind or in front of the back tires to help get you unstuck in snow conditions. This has saved me on a number of occasions. I'd say there will still be deep snow from the village on up to the Bowen Ranch in the morning hours tomorrow at least.
