The "total alkalinity" value is a measure of the amount of salts in the water. They are important for swiming pools because they act as a buffer to keep the pH from drifting too much.

For a hot spring Deep Creek doesn't have very many disolved solids (i.e. "minerals"winking smiley. You can tell just by looking at the pools and seeing that there's not a lot of mineral build up on the sides.
