They could just put the mashed acorns in a "flo-thru" basket
or something and set it in the flow of the hot springs
(crab cooker?) for a couple hours & Voila!
A little longer in the stream.

That might explain the proximity of the grinding holes???

Still a lot of work, makes you appreciate what they had to go through.
