I have a libertarian streak in me about 50 yards wide. But it does not mean I'm a liberal, unless you mean a JFK liberal. Since we're not in the 1960's any more, we pretty much have to identify ourselves by today's standards. By those standards, I'm pretty conservative, believe in strong rights of private property owners, but there are limits to everything. I think the public ought to have very liberal rights to what it decides to do with public lands, with reasonable environmental considerations as a distant secondary factor.
I have no idea being identified when I ride, since I don't ride illegally, and go out of my way to avoid pissing off the residents of the only place I go where there are structures....Randsburg. I realize that there are some youngsters who don't think when they ride wheelies up Butte Ave. But the last two who did that when I was present, I chased them down and asked them politely not to do that, lest we all be kicked out of town. They agreed, and promised to keep the wheelies to the unpopulated areas.
I'm not an unreasonable guy, I just believe very strongly in protecting the long-term interests of this nation I am so unbelievably happy to be a part of. I happen to think that the best way toward minimizing impact on the environment is a free and open society with reasonable controls.
I don't have any problem whatsoever with practical environmentalists. Many are my friends. I spent 12 years backpacking with the Boy Scout troop my sons were involved with, which is the very same troop I was involved with as a young man. The Boy Scouts teach some very practical environmental skills and knowledge, as well as stewardship of natural places. Many of the other adult leaders are environmentalists, but they are practical in their approach, expecting only what we are capable of providing as a society.
I'm not an environmentalist, but a hunter and conservationist. I'm practical in my approach, and happen to think that the desert has done a very good job of dealing with large-scale OHV use, dumping, shooting, camping, wildfire damage, and urban sprawl over the decades. But it's not perfect. If we're looking for that, we're asking too much.
I am not an extremist. I won't lie to you.
