Unfortunately, whenever a nude miniculture manages to exist this kind of behavior sometimes occurs. The clothing optional area at San Onofre State Beach attracts "weirdos" but the wonderful unoffficial committee that patrols the place act as a team to stop gawking, picture taking (of people without permission) and other disagreeable behaviors. Deep Creek Hot Springs have had visitors who acted offensively but were stopped by group suggestions, or in some cases, action.

Some years ago (my history at DCHS started in 1970) a lady friend and I visited the springs on a weekday. There were a few others there, all male, and one kept staring at my lady companion. He was holding a little dog and kept trying to put the mutt into my friend's hands while making as much physical contact with her as he could. I warned him to leave us alone, but he continued to stay and stare until my friend and I left for an upstream beach where I expected to be left alone. After we were there for a short while I heard a noise on the hillside across the creek. It was the stalker and his puppy. I believe that the weirdo wanted to spy on us in the hopes that he might see sexual activity. My lady friend and I, platonic friends, were just talking, but I was angry at the weirdo's intrusive behavior. I warned him to leave us alone, but he laughed and said, "what're you gonna do?" In those days squirrels at the hot springs were numerous and aggressive, often chewing through backpacks to get at hidden food, so I carried a slingshot to warn them away. Well, the squirrel across the creek was threatening my privacy so I shot a few pebbles near him with the warning that I would aim at him if he didn't leave. He said, "you're not gonna shoot at me.... you might hit my puppy," and held the little dog in front of his torso. I practiced with the slingshot a lot and could hit targets within 50 yards and this "target" was within that limit. My first shot hit his right foot. He yowled and cursed, but did not leave. My next shot hit a knee prompting more screams and profanity. He held the pup lower, trying to cover his legs. My next shot hit him in the chest and he then held the dog there. Luckily, my final shot scored a hit in his "jewels." and the predator, crying and cursing, left the hillside. Hours later my friend and I walked back to the springs area, but we never saw the weirdo again. Another regular later told me that Mr. Weird tried the skulking act later that summer and was beaten badly by an outraged man. None of us ever saw the weird one again.
