In my opinion, a turnaround is highly improbable considering the momentum of our current lifestyle, the natural consequences of overpopulation and the cyclical destabilization of the planet.
The good news is that if we start living more sustainably, (either individually or in community) we will have a much better chance of surviving the changes that now seem inevitable.
That is why human evolution sometimes takes giant steps.
