Hello Paul :-) Juniper Flats, being a good distance north of Deep Creek was most surely not affected, since it appears this fire made at most, a brief advance on the northern side of Deep Creek. Regarding the immediate vicinity of DCHS, considering the fire behavior around 5PM yesterday, and the nights cooler conditions, I would guess that the fire probably did not advance much further down the ridges towards the hotsprings. Hopefully that is the case. I drove down to the Mojave Dam this morning and the fire is producing no smoke as of aound 11 AM except for some little wisps I could see coming up from some small hotspots. I could not see up into the higher terrain where most of the fire burned, but there are no signs of any meaningful burning as seen from the Hesperia area off of main street, so it appears that a combination of cooler temps, lighter winds, and the efforts of fire fighters have quelled this fire for the time being, even though it was indicated that it was only 5 % contained as of last night. From the Mojave dam I could see that the fire did not burn the hills immediatly adjacent to the dam area, but I could see ridges burn't up in the canyon about a mile or so. I could not tell from that angle weather the fire did cross the creek to the north side last night, since no hills on the northside showed signs of fire from my view there. I called the Sky Forest Ranger Station ( 909-382-2782 ) which covers the fire zone to ask them about public access to DCHS. The woman I talked to said that route 3N59A is currently closed. That road goes from east to west through the USFS parking area along the Bowen Ranch trail. She said trail 3W02 was not currently shown as closed so perhaps the springs are still open to the public. But also since the fire was burning very close to DCHS, just above it on the southern ridges, the reality on the ground may be that it could still be closed to access. I will be checking periodically to see if 3N59A gets opened back up, after this fire gets mopped up, since it is essentially the only route for those in the public that wish to hike to DCHS, by other routes that usage of the Bowen Ranch. The Bradford Ridge trail and the burned lands along it may be closed for some time, like what happened after the Willow Fire ( August 1999 ), when DCHS and surrounding USFS lands were closed for aproximately a year.
