Joe, it is never appropriate to feed wild animals food. It is totally disruptive to the ecosystem. They become dependent on human food and then do not search or eat the food they naturally would without human intervention. Unfortunately you are "educating" your son in the wrong way. Feeding wild animals to give humans pleasure is a harmful and stupid thing to do.
