A conservation group is trying to buy nearly a thousand acres for Joshua Tree National Park that Congress removed from the park in the 1950s apparently to make way for residential development. The development never happened, but the 955 acres at the north edge of Quail Mountain went on the market about two years ago, raising the possibility that houses might be built there after all.
