It looks it could be, or is similiar too, a Burrowing Owl, which can be found here in the High Desert. At a home I recently built and sold, near HWY 18, south of Granite Mountains, there was a group of Burrowing Owls living behind the home in squirrel sized holes in the ground that they dig. One morning, the time when they would be spotted most, I counted 7 of them sitting on the chainlink fence that surrounded the home project. They have an interesting way of flying, very close to the ground many times, and when they are standing on the ground, they often bob thier heads up and down real fast, funny to watch. I think they are a protected species since thier numbers are dwindling because of the heavy development of high desert lands in recent years. Hopefully the new owner who bought the house I built will let them stay, and not cover thier dens.
