I did watch all of the " State Of The Union " speech last night. It was a Circus as usual, with the only thing missing, the Elephants, the Popcorn, and the Clowns. I was supprised to hear Bush state that, " America is addicted to Oil ", about the only thing of truth he said all evening IMHO. I think it is a confirming sign, that the Oil Crisis reality is becoming, " unavoidable to ignore". Bush offered up Hydrogen power, Ethenol, and Canadian Tar Sands, along with Technological solutions that will all come along to keep the American ( and worldwide ) Party Swinging. All of these supposed fixes, will not supply anything more that a very small piece of the pie, that current hydrocarbon energy now comprises. Rampant economic development in China and India, along with all the other incalculable hydrocarbon based expansion worldwide, will ramp up consumption of oil and gas, as production teeters, then soon will fail, to meet the voracious demands. All the addicted populations, hooked on the quality of life that could only be provided by these cheap energy sources, will not give up, in any large measure, thier diverse, and energy intensive lifestyles, until hydrocarbon fuel supplies collaspse, and forces the huge issues of change globaly. Oil and Gas depletion is but one, of a big list of other severe problems that will be combining, feeding off eachother, and converging, to paint the troubled landscape of the coming years. Exploding population is the Elephant in the closet, that the govenments of the world, arn't dealing with. To touchy to tell people how much, and when, to pro-create. Our soon to be, 7 Billion people on the planet, is driving every problem in dire directions. Once the ancient, and finite, sources of energy that Oil and gas are, become excessively depleted, mass die offs will ensue, especially in the poorer countries, due to insufficient food production, a severely degraded resources base, disease, lack of clean water, social chaos, wars for whats left, etc. The " lucky " ones left, will have a much harsher world to face, than the bueatiful and abundant one, we have so quickly plundered.
