Bald-eagle watch volunteers needed
Volunteers are needed on Saturday for this season's first bald eagle census in the San Bernardino Mountains, which supports Southern California's largest wintering eagle population.
Volunteers will stand watch for one hour at Big Bear Lake, Baldwin Lake, Lake Arrowhead, Silverwood Lake, Lake Gregory and Little Green Valley Lake. No experience is necessary, but warm clothing, binoculars and a watch are suggested.
Big Bear Lake volunteers should meet at the Forest Service Big Bear Discovery Center on North Shore Drive at 8 a.m. for instructions. Volunteers for Lake Arrowhead should meet at the Sky Forest Ranger Station at 8 a.m. or call (909) 382-2828. Volunteers for Silverwood Lake should call (760) 389-2281 for information and instructions.
Last winter, there were 16 sightings of eagles in the Big Bear Lake area. Counts will be held monthly through March. They are coordinated by the U.S. Forest Service.
